Let's Revise!

Week 21st -23rd

Hello! How’s your weekend going?
This rain is a bit annoying (disappointing, something you don’t like)! Fortunately, it seems we are going to have better weather for next weekend. And that’s great because next week we are having a longer weekend. We are celebrating Mayday.

Last week we started talking about the awful news of the 13-year old kid who killed a teacher in a high school in Catalonia.
This is something we hadn’t heard before in Spain. It seems the kid isn’t sane and he suffers from a mental condition. It’s so sad!

But, we continued the week with more cheerful (happier) subjects.
Laura told us about her journey to Rome. She told us how beautiful Rome is and how badly, Romans drive!
We went on talking about holidays.
We listened to Sean telling us about his uncle and aunt’s holidays in Ibiza. Although they had already been there and they had enjoyed their holiday very much, this time it was quite different. The first time Sean’s uncle and aunt went to Ibiza it was in the sixties and the island was peaceful and quiet. This time they found that Ibiza is now ‘the party island’; crowded with young people, a lot of noise from bars and discos and people in the street screaming and shouting. They didn’t like their experience at all!

Then, we had a little review on grammar, vocabulary and listening.
You can try these exercises:

And that was it! This week we’ll talk about photographs!

See you on Tuesday!

Disastrous holidays.

Week 14th – 16th April

Hello everybody! How was your weekend?

I hope it was nice. Mine was busy and boring. I was busy because I had to do a lot of things. And boring because none of those things were funny, amusing or interesting!!!!

What did we do last week?

We finished talking about definitions and we listened to the quiz show. You weren’t very good at it!
In the quiz, the contestant (the person who played the game) had to guess six words. The presenter read the definitions of the words on the cards. The time was two minutes. The definitions couldn’t contain the word defined. For example, if the word was taxi – driver, the words taxi or drive couldn’t be in the definition. As Laura put it (said), ‘That’s Taboo’.

Then, we read about three people talking about their holidays.

The destinations were perfect but the holidays turned out (have as a result) to be a disaster!
For Tim, his disastrous holidays took place (happened) when he was 17. The destination was perfect: Brittany in France. The problem was that he had to go with his parents and he had preferred to go with his friends!
Gabriela from Rome wanted to escape from the hot summer in Italy going with her partner to Sweden. Unfortunately, that summer there was a heatwave (extremely hot temperatures for a long period of time) in Sweden, which is a country that isn’t prepared for hot weather. They spent their holidays arguing all the time!
Kelly, from Belfast. She broke up (break a relationship; separate) with her boyfriend. She felt depressed and decided to go somewhere beautiful like the Seychelles islands. The travel agent didn’t tell her that the destination was romantic and the favourite of couples on their honeymoon! (the journey couples go on after their wedding). So, she felt even more depressed!
The people used the past. Do you remember the past simple tense? You can revise it with these videos.

See you on Tuesday!!!

Definitions, Explaining Words.

Week 7th – 9th April

Here we are again after Easter holidays!

We started the week learning some useful expressions to explain words we don’t know how to say in English.
For example:

·         It’s someone who works in a restaurant.
·         It’s the person who takes the food from the kitchen to the tables.
·         It’s a place where you go when you want to buy something.
·         It’s a thing which you use to talk.
·         It’s a kind of machine.
·         It’s the opposite of tall.
·         It’s the same as worried.
·         It’s like thin, but it means thin and attractive.
·         It’s how you feel when you have a lot of things to do.
·         For example, you do this with the TV.

We completed a crossword in pairs. Asking for and giving definitions.

And we talked about:
·      A person who is very important to you.
·      Something which you couldn’t live without.
·      A place where you would like to go for a special evening.
·      A famous person who you like a lot.
·      A thing which you often lose.
·      A place where you were very happy when you were a child.

And that was our week…! See you on Tuesday!

the Devil's Dictionary

Last Week of March, 2015

Hello! How were your Easter holidays?
I guess (think) they were fantastic! We had such good weather! Amazing! But now, they are over…not exactly because in the UK, today is Easter Monday, same as in Catalonia and other places in Spain.

Do you remember what we did before Easter?

We finished reading, talking and listening about Richard Taylor’s blind date. He felt physically attracted to the girl his mother chose but after a while, he found out (discovered) they didn’t have that much in common. He really took to (liked) the girl his friend had chosen. But, in this case it was ‘she’ who didn’t fancy (like) him!
Then, we read about the ‘Devil’s Dictionary’.
This is a kind of dictionary which contains funny and sarcastic definitions of words. It was written by Ambrose Bierce between 1881 and 1887.
We can find definitions like these:
·         A star is a person who works all her life to become famous and then wear sunglasses so people don’t recognize her.
·         A secret is something which you only tell one person.
·         A bank is a place where you can borrow money only if you can show that you don’t need it.
We use ‘who’ for people.
We use ‘which’ for things or animals.
We use ‘where’ for places.
The relative pronouns are used to link (join) sentences. The relative pronoun substitutes a noun that usually goes before the relative. Look at how they link sentences.
A star is a person.
A star works all her life to become famous.
A star is a person WHO works all her life to become famous.

Tomorrow we’ll continue with definitions. And we’ll solve a crossword!
See you tomorrow!
