Here We Go!

Week 8th-15th January 2015

Hello again!!!

We start a new year and we are going to start a new level.
Before going onto Pre-intermediate, let’s revise what we learnt in Elementary.
The week that starts today (because he first day of the English week is Sunday not Monday) we are going to revise the exercises on the photocopy I gave you on Thursday 8th (our first day of class after Christmas holidays) ‘Level 1 Grammar check’

The first day of class, as it was expected, we talked about the previous holidays.
Last week, we finished talking about ‘Amazing Experiences’ and the use of ‘like’ and ‘would like to’.
Remember:
·         We use like + ing to talk about hobbies or activities in general.
I like cooking. (it’s not true! I hate it!)
·         We use would like to when we talk about something we want to do or our wishes.
I’d (would) like to travel to Japan.

Then, we read about three presents to remember: Wine tasting, interior design tuition and water skiing.
Of course, you wouldn’t (would not) give a present like ‘Wine tasting’ to  a person who doesn’t like drinking alcohol! Or ‘water skiing’ to somebody who can’t swim!

English exercise "Like or would like" created by laure95 with The test builderClick here to see the current stats of this English test [Save] [Load] [?]
1. I  to have a car.
2. I  lions and tigers very much.
3. She  playing tennis.
4. I  to eat a pizza tonight.
5. They  to buy a house but they haven't got enough money.
6. My mother  a new dress to go to Paul's birthday.
7. I don't  your tee-shirt, it's awful.
8. My son  a video game for his birthday.
9. Mike  children very much.
10. Ann  to work for this company.
11. You  dancing, don't you?
We reviewed comparatives with a game.
In our gapped-sentences (sentences with an empty space in the middle) we had to fill in the gap (complete) using a comparative adjective. Our classmate had another piece of paper with different gapped-sentences. We had to guess which comparative was used in his/her sentences. The winner was Luis!

·         Swimming is better exercise than walking.
·         A Rolls Royce is more expensive than a Citroen.
·         Russia is bigger than Spain.
·         Men are more dangerous drivers than women.

And we finished the week with a listening exercise.
 That was it!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend! Although it’s so cold that the best plan for me is staying home watching TV and playing cards.

See you on Tuesday!

Happy New Year!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! HAPPY 2015!!!

Hello everybody! Are you enjoying your winter holidays?

There’s very little left before we start our classes in this New Year, 2015.
What did you do during your holidays?

I went to the village both on Christmas Eve (24th December) and on New Year’s Eve (31st December). I got to the village by train on 23rd December. My brother and his family were already at my parents’ house. I set ‘The manger’ (the typical Nativity Scene which is traditional at Christmas in Spain). I didn’t put up the Christmas tree because my mother, nephew and niece had already done it.

The weather was cold, as usual at this time of the year. When the train left Madrid, it was sunny there but in the village was foggy and cold. On Christmas Eve I had dinner with my family: my parents, my brother, my sister in law, my nephew and my niece. After dinner we played cards, bingo and board games.
On Christmas Day, we opened the presents that Father Christmas brought us and we went out to have the aperitif (alcoholic drink before lunch to whet, stimulate, the appetite) before lunch.

On New Year’s Eve, I went to the village again. The weather was Ok. It was cold but sunny. I had dinner with my parents. My brother and his family weren’t there that night. They were at their parents in law. We had dinner, we tried to eat up the ‘grapes’(we couldn’t. There were very big this year. I hope to be lucky, anyway)

As you know there’s still Twelfth Night (5th January) left; but I’ll spend that festivity at home, waiting for my presents because I’ve been very good this year! What about you? Have you been good?

Well, why don’t you write what you did at Christmas? Did you do anything similar to this?

What are your New Year Resolutions? What about these…?
I’m going to post something on the blog every week.
I’m going to learn at least ten words in English every week.
I’m going to do homework.
I’m going to speak more English in class…

I would like to congratulate you on your projects about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. They were very good and I learnt a lot about Christmas traditions in Finland, Austria, Germany and The States.

Happy New Year! See you on Thursday 8th January 2015!
